GRANT FUNDED PROGRAMS
CIPUSA submits grants to various organizations on a
regular basis. Many of CIPUSA’s group programs
are grant funded. In the past few years, CIPUSA has
worked closely with the U.S. Department of State on
grant funded programs including a women’s non-profit
leadership program in Egypt in collaboration with the
Alliance for Arab Women, and an upcoming project centering
around workforce development in Ethiopia in collaboration
with the University of Addis Ababa and the University
of Illinois at Chicago.
Development of a Community Work & Life Center in
Addis Ababa
The Council of International Programs USA (CIPUSA),
the Addis Ababa University (AAU), the African AIDS Initiative
International, Inc. (AAII) and the University of Illinois
at Chicago (UIC) are partnering to provide a cross-cultural
training program facilitating the creation of the AAU
Community Work and Life Center. The program’s
objective is to strengthen the workforce in Ethiopia
through workforce preparation and life skills development.
The Community Work and Life Center will provide essential
workforce readiness skills, connecting university graduates
with employers, while focusing on life skills essential
for the development of a healthy, productive workforce.
The primary focus of life skills development will be
HIV/AIDS prevention, education and awareness. Other
life skills addressed by the Center will include leadership
and conflict resolution. CIPUSA and its partners have
designed a program that provides hands-on training and
observational internships in the U.S. for ten Ethiopian
professionals and opportunities for U.S. based professionals
to learn and assist in the creation of the Community
Work and Life Center at AAU.
The five-week program will begin at CIPUSA’s office
in Chicago, Illinois and will incorporate CIPUSA’s
nine offices around the United States. Ten days of skill-based
training will take place in Chicago with seminars, facilitated
discussions, site visits, meetings with experts, and
action planning sessions. Two weeks will be spent participating
in practical training and observational internships
at career and life centers in CIPUSA’s affiliate
cities. The remaining time will be spent in Chicago
action planning for the creation of the Center at AAU.
A follow-on program will take ten U.S. professionals
to Ethiopia to assist in facilitating action plans and
ensuring the sustainability of the program while learning
about Ethiopian economic, political and social systems.

Community Leadership Program
CIPUSA recently received a government earmark through
the United States Congress and the U.S. Department of
State as seed money for the Community Leadership Program.
The program is scheduled to begin in 2004 and applications
will be solicited for review every October. CIPUSA is
currently seeking funding from several foundations in
an effort to expand its current programs including the
Community Leadership Program.

Egyptian NGO Women Leadership
Training - View
Photos
Funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational
and Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Alliance
for Arab Women (AAW) this program was designed to enhance
the skills of 10 Egyptian women in NGO management and
leadership through educational seminars and “hands-on”
observational internships.
The Council of International Programs USA is in the
final phases of a successful training program with the
Alliance for Arab Women. The project began in September
of 2003 and will be complete in 2005. In September of
2003, ten Egyptian women participated in a non-profit
management training program. The participants spent
two weeks in Cleveland taking part in intensive “train
the trainers” sessions in non-profit management
and leadership. After the Cleveland portion of training
was complete, the trainees flew to CIPUSA’s nine
affiliate offices located throughout the United States
for observational internships in non-profit organizations.
Upon return to Egypt, the women leaders have not only
been busy working to improve their own organizations
but have begun a training program through the Alliance
for Arab Women to train other women in non-profit management.
In March of 2004, CIPUSA led a delegation of trainers
to Cairo for follow-up and additional training. The
CIPUSA training team observed the Egyptian group as
they used the skills gained in the U.S. to conduct their
own training sessions in NGO management. Since then,
the Egyptian group has designed an NGO management manual
in Arabic and continues to build their core group of
trainers. The Council of International Programs USA
continues to monitor the progress of the partner organizations
as well as maintain an open forum for discussion between
the women and their U.S. counterparts.
